GrabFood Price Storm

In 2023's tough economy, GrabFood fought rising prices with a discount blitz named "Thần Deal" (God Deal). This clever play on Thần Điêu - "The Condor Heroes" (a Vietnamese childhood favorite) showed GrabFood as food heroes battling high prices with amazing deals.

The Context

Around August 2023, Motion Graphic Designer/VFX Artist Mr. Nguyen Tran asked me to support the GrabFood Price Storm project with him. Nguyen is a former colleague of mine at Dinosaur Agency. Having collaborated on many projects before, I quickly accepted the invitation.

This video is for GrabFood's mid-year promotion campaign. Mr. Nguyen and I play the role of a post-production house. Mr. Nguyen will handle 3D and motion scenes for the project. I perform the role of handling the excess wire during the shooting process, removing the background, tracking the phone screen, handling errors during the recording process. In general, Mr. Nguyen and I will process the scenes to get the best output.

GrabFood is a big brand, so I was a little nervous at first when working with them. And that worry is not redundant when GrabFood gives very detailed feedback on the VFX part. There was a scene where it took up to 5 hours of work

It's also a tracking technique, but each scene is a different challenge. In this scene, we have to track the GrabFood voucher to the screen, and at the same time we have to keep the screen real by inserting the lighting.

The most favorable part of the whole project is probably this scene. I just need to remove the background, luckily the string can also be easily removed by masking

In this scene, as you can see, it seems very easy to just remove the rope, but there is one problem: the joint is big and the shirt is deformed when the girl is hung up. After removing the wires with CC Simple Wire Removal, I used Content Aware Fill to fill frame by frame with the big wires, and used the Liquify effect to remove (also frame by frame) the bulging shirt scenes.

In these background deletion scenes, hair separation is a problem. I use a combination of roto, blur, and mask to separate the character from the background in the smoothest way. Especially in this scene, as you can see, the girl's shoes were covered by the staff's hands on the set. The only way I could do it was to cut the shoe and attach it to the girl's foot.

I put these works in the portfolio just as a good memory of the collaboration between Nguyen and me.
